WA build strong lead after early Richardson strikes

Jhye Richardson's Ashes stocks continue to rise, with the Western Australia speedster sparking a Tasmania battling collapse to put his side on top in their Marsh Sheffield Shield clash.

WA were 4-170 in their second innings at stumps on day three, a lead of 258, as they look to push for an outright result.

Richardson, who finished with 4-53 from 28 overs, struck two blows with the second new ball early in the day as Tasmania fell from 2-210 to 9-302 at lunch.

He had Ben McDermott (four) edging an outswinger to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe before getting rid of Jake Doran for a duck two overs later.

Richardson, coming off eight wickets for the match in WA's convincing win over Queensland, now has 20 scalps for the Shield season at the miserly average of 12.65.

His morning spell came after toiling late on Monday to pick up the only two Tasmanian wickets for the day.

Only Jordan Silk offered any resistance for the Tigers on Tuesday, with the skipper's counter-attacking 73 dragging his side to 317.

Test allrounder Cameron Green spent some valuable time in the middle for WA after falling for 15 in the first innings, posting 52 off 92 balls to finish unbeaten at stumps.

The Tigers lost 4-16 in the first session as Richardson opened the door for Cameron Gannon (3-87) and Matthew Kelly (2-72) to get in on the action.

WA are a bowler down after Lance Morris suffered a side strain on day two.

Richardson, who played two Tests in 2019, is in Australia's 15-man Ashes squad along with fellow quicks Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Michael Neser.

He can further impress in a three-day intra-squad match in Brisbane on December 1 ahead of the first Test against England on December 8.
