Final updates ahead of Big Bash Drafts

Final preparations are underway ahead of the Sunday’s Weber WBBL|09 and KFC BBL|13 Overseas Player Drafts.

The Drafts will feature four rounds, with Platinum players able to be picked in Round 1, Platinum and Gold in Round 2, Gold and Silver in Round 3 and Silver and Bronze in Round 4

One change has been made to the WBBL Draft pool, with former South Africa captain, Danè van Niekerk still recovering from an injury that took place during The Hundred and as such, has withdrawn her nomination.

West Indian Nichloas Pooran and Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan have withdrawn from the BBL Draft. 

Fans can tune into the Weber WBBL|09 Draft from 5:30pm AEST and the KFC BBL|13 Draft from 7pm AEST on Fox Cricket, available on Foxtel and Kayo Sports. 

Clubs able to select a minimum of two and maximum of three players in total; each Club will be required to pass in at least one round. 

Each Club’s WBBL squad will comprise of 15 players, including at least two overseas players from the Draft, with the option of a third overseas player from the Draft or via a direct nomination. In the BBL, squads will feature 18 players.

*Within the Platinum band for the BBL Draft, numeration will vary pending a players availability. Players with full availability with receive the full $420k, $400k for 10 matches, $380k for 9 nine matches and $360k for 1-8 matches.

Draft Order

Sydney Thunder holds the prized first pick in the WBBL Draft, with the Melbourne Stars to begin proceedings with pick one in the BBL Draft.

Retention Picks

Clubs may choose to retain one overseas player in each Draft. Players will be an eligible retention player if they fit any of the following criteria: 

  • Have been in a Big Bash team squad for a minimum of two seasons and haven’t been contracted to another team since 

  • Have been in a Big Bash team squad the previous season 

  • Was in a team squad last season but did not play in the starting 13 and have been approved by the Big Bash Technical Committee 

  • Is otherwise approved by the Big Bash Technical Committee due to exceptional circumstances 

 

Direct signing

The WBBL Draft offers players the option of nominating to be directly contracted by a Club after the Draft only. If a player opts for a direct nomination, they are not available to be selected by a Club during the Draft.  

If a player opts for this approach and is directly contracted by a Club after the Draft, the player’s retainer cannot exceed more than 95% of the amount a Club must pay a Silver Overseas Player.
